So there I was: a measly middle-schooler with more acne than esteem, wrapped in an extra-large Marilyn Manson shirt that shrouded any hint of musculature or libido swiveling within my lank and sheet-white prepubescent frame. Sweating with eyes darting for an exit, all the while awaiting the inevitable - my life, thanks to the threat of one fast-paced contest, would soon be changed forever.
Draped in enormous clothes, there I stood, between a cluster of laughing girls and teeth-clattering boys, wide-eyed and nervous at the thought that perhaps, SHE, was going to challenge ME...to an arm-wrestling contest.
Her name was Siobhan (Shavon) and she was my sixth grade class bully. Bigger, meaner, and stronger than any boy my age, Siobhan would force unknowing and insecure boys, like myself, into going out with her, and more often than not, break the ice by challenging any male within ear-shot to arm-wrestling warfare.
Sure, losing to a boy, not so bad. But losing to a girl, in middle-school, at anything, that's hospital trauma. Fifth degree burns baby.
Truth be told, I never arm-wrestled this behemoth of a middle-school schoolgirl - as I was able to slink away from every trap, every guise, every possible moment that my manhood would be forever shattered.
It may seem strange, but lifting and weight training may have only entered my life thanks to one testosterone-fuled little girl, hell-bent on French-kiss-forcing and preteen emasculation.
Arm-wrestling on college campus' is as familiar as a keg-stand or an awkward kiss with that boy you pitied or that girl who traps you in a frat house corner.
It's a contest that guys thrive on to seem tougher, stronger, and altogether more imposing, and the girls the same, as arm-wrestling is just as prominent for women as it is men.
Whatever the case, if you're stuck in a situation like mine (that was middle-school people!!!!) or live in a frenzied, macho college boy environment, try out these tips on winning at arm-wrestling.
